MR based Texture Analysis in NAFLD
Speaker: Dr. Rajeev Singh
Manipal Hospitals Radiology Group had conducted a CME on “MR-based texture analysis in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)” at Columbia Asia Hospitals, Yeshwanthpur. It was attended by the radiologists of MHRG and DNB PG students.
Dr. Rajeev Singh was the speaker of the CME and has given a presentation on NAFLD. The topic was chosen keeping in view the rising concern on non-alcoholic fatty liver and the high level of risk associated with it.
The basic learning objectives of the study were:
- To know about NAFLD.
- Methods of detection of fibrosis.
- Value of US and MR Elastography.
- What is MR texture analysis?
- Discuss the role of MR texture analysis in NAFLD.
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) affects up to a third of the population worldwide and may confer increased cardiometabolic risk with consequent adverse cardiovascular outcomes independent of
traditional cardiovascular risk factors and metabolic syndrome. It is characterized almost universally by insulin resistance and is strongly associated with type 2 diabetes and obesity.
NAFLD is the pathological presence of hepatic steatosis in the absence of any secondary cause for hepatic fat accumulation, prevalence ranging from 20% to 46%. It can be classified into 1. Simple Steatosis (SS) (70%-75%, excess liver fat without inflammation or cellular injury) and 2. Non-alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH) ( 25%-30% presence of excess liver fat
with inflammation and cellular injury)
Dr. Rajeev Singh has thrown light on the various methods of detection and quantification of fibrosis such as Biopsy or Non- Invasive-Serum markers and Imaging.
