How MHRG helped Clinic at the Mall, Uganda provide high quality and personalized patient care possible to its people

Story behind the birth of The Clinic at the Mall, Uganda:
The Clinic at the Mall provides accessible, high quality and personalized healthcare services to families in Kampala and beyond. It is a unique one-stop medical care facility that promotes the health and wellbeing of the patients by not only providing accessible high quality care, but also by engaging them under their own care as well.
Dr. Nandawula Kanyerezi Mutema, who is fondly called as Dr. Nandi by her patients and staffs, is the Executive Director and Physician. In 1997, Dr. Nandi joined the City of Cincinnati Health Department as a Primary Care Physician at the Braxton Cann Health Center rising to the ranks of Managing Physician. She had studied, worked and lived in the US for 21 years It was in 2013 she realized that she needs to go back home to Uganda to utilize all the skills she had learnt to further improve the health care at home in whatever small way she could. Thus, the dream of The Clinic at The Mall began.
In January 2015, Dr. Nandi returned to Kampala to practice at The Clinic at The Mall with the desire to create the change she would like to see in the healthcare sector within Uganda with the vision “to provide high quality, accessible, and personalized healthcare services”
Challenges faced by Clinic at the Mall:
“I knew we needed to have all the diagnostic modalities to enable us to provide the best healthcare possible. With an X-ray, Ultrasound, Mammogram and CT scan at our disposal, we needed to have a radiologist who could read all these modalities, and give us results in the shortest time possible to enable us to give the best medical care possible” she says.
An elegant solution provided by Manipal Hospitals Radiology Group:
Since high quality, and personalized care were at the heart of Dr. Mutema’s vision, she entrusted the responsibility of making this care accessible to her patients to Manipal Hospitals Radiology Group (MHRG).
MHRG devised a 24/7 remote radiology solution for the Clinic. A trained onsite sonologist with remote interpretation of the ultrasound studies helped them to fulfil their vision.
Standardization of Process:
To ensure optimal clinical care it was essential to fine tune every aspect of the operational process.
Onsite technicians
MHRG and its team of Clinical Radiologists designed the Image Acquisition processes and trained the onsite technicians at the Manipal Hospitals
Clinical Information Capture
MHRG designed and standardized the clinical data gathering and reporting formats in consideration of the ethnic diversity that the clinic catered to.
Support team
A 24/7 support team was established at the MHRG operational base to ensure a smooth and strong working relationship.
Lives MHRG have touched:
- “A self-referred 51-year-old with a cough who requested a chest x-ray and a mammogram to be diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer having been treated for pneumonia over and over again…..
- “45-year-old lady with chest discomfort and shortness of breath to be diagnosed promptly with pulmonary emboli with the aid of chest angiography…..
- “A 32-year-old gentleman brought in by his workmates at the end of the work day writhing in pain to be diagnosed with kidney stone and Hydronephrosis on CT scan within a couple of hours…..
- “ A 45-year-old lady taking part in our Breast Cancer Screening exercise in October 2015 to learn early enough that she had breast cancer. She has since received definitive treatment and is doing well.
In Dr. Nandi’s words, “Manipal Hospitals Radiology Group (MHRG) has been the best partner we could have asked for. We are exposed to the whole department with all its specialists that render reports in an accurate and timely manner. It is like having a radiologist on site with each subspecialty represented!”
